SPOKANE, Wash. — A major league baseball player stepped up in a big way for a Spokane little league team.
Mariners catcher Mitch Garver donated $15,000 to send the Spokane Dirtbags to the West Zone Regional in California.
Garver played baseball with one of the coaches back in his home state of New Mexico. When the Dirtbags reached out for help, it was a no-brainer for Garver to donate.
“It was a team that had an opportunity to do something but didn’t have the means to do it,” Garver said. “I took that upon myself. I saw their GoFundMe page had almost no help coming in financially so there was an opportunity for me to help out. Initially, I was going to donate a few hundred, a few thousand dollars to get them on their way. I just realized I had an opportunity to do something for these kids that they deserved. So I decided to fund it all. “
They will be competing through the weekend.
