PULLMAN, Wash. – From rocking and rowdy to quiet and frustrated, Gonzaga men’s basketball came in and out of Pullman on a mission: earn the season sweep over Washington State.
The Cougars started the game on an 8-2 run, similar to their 12-3 start against Saint Mary’s only a few weeks ago.
Just like that game against the Gaels, the Cougs couldn’t keep up the momentum, and lost to the Zags 84-63, the seventh loss in the Cougs’ last eight games and the Zags’ fourth-straight win.
LaJuan Watts’ 19 points on seven made shots picked up Wazzu from the poor performances from Ethan Price (1-5 shooting), Dane Erikstrup (3-11) and Nate Calmese (2-13).
Nolan Hickman had a fantastic game for Gonzaga, splashing four of his five threes and dishing five assists. Ryan Nembhard, the nation’s leader in assists, only managed two in an unusual off-night for the point guard.
Graham Ike controlled the paint, scoring 17 and collecting a game-high 13 rebounds (no other player on either team had more than five).
This win moves Gonzaga to 21-7, 12-3 in the conference with three games to go, next hosting Saint Mary’s on senior night this Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
Washington State stays home too, they welcome Santa Clara to the Palouse Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
