ATLANTA, Ga. – For the first time in MLB Home Run Derby competition, a catcher is the champion.
Seattle Mariner star Cal Raleigh, the season leader in home runs, wins the Derby in his first appearance during his first-ever All-Star season.
Raleigh is the first Mariner to win the event since the legendary Ken Griffey Jr. (three-time champ) and the first switch-hitter to win the Derby outright, as Ruben Sierra tied in 1998.
The North Carolina native had his dad throw to him and brother as catcher tonight, helping him to 18 home runs in the final round, beating Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero by three homers.
Catch Raleigh in the All-Star Game tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. PST.
