ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Another former Gonzaga Bulldog joins the ranks of professional athletes, but Troy Johnston did so in a pretty rare form.
Instead of the usual men’s basketball talent to make the upper echelon of his sport, Johnston earned a spot in MLB tonight after the Miami Marlins called him up from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
The 28-year-old earned a hit on his first career MLB at-bat, earning cheers from the St. Louis crowd.
Johnston joins just three other active players in the bigs, including relief pitchers Alek Jacob, Eli Morgan and Casey Legumina.
