CHENEY, Wash. – The Eastern Washington Eagles fight through Week 2 of their fall camp, and head coach Aaron Best spoke to us today on their progress so far.
“The fact that you don’t get first downs doesn’t mean that you’re a bad offense. The fact that you get first downs doesn’t mean necessarily that you’re a great offense,” Best said. “Because, really, the resume is built in season. You’re putting together the book now, the rough draft, but the final draft is really when the season’s comes and you’re starting to write those real chapters.”
Starting running back Malik Dotson agreed, sharing what’s improved on his side of the ball.
“Everybody’s talking, we’re talking more,” Dotson said. “Offensive line’s getting there, big shoutout to Jared though, he’s kinda keeping us together, and the quarterbacks as well, same with Nate Bell.”
The offensive line remains a heavy talking point this offseason, the unit still developing with all five 2024 starters gone. Coach Best elaborated on his “saltiness” he says he wants in his best o-linemen.
“Some of these guys, I mean, some of these o-linemen, you hear them talk, some of the best guys just exude confidence verbally, you like some of that stuff, right?” Best said. “But, were also the guys that were usually at school dances that were on the walls, and so we’re trying to get them off the walls into the dance party, and actually taking part. But just kinda letting go, not worried about perfection, worrying about production.”
EWU has their first scrimmage of fall camp at ONE Spokane Stadium next Thursday, August 14th.
