PULLMAN, Wash – WSU fans can now buy beer and wine at football games, possibly starting with the Apple Cup on September 20th.
The Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board gave the green light Wednesday to a one-year pilot program.
It will allow beer and wine to be sold in the stadium with the exception of the student section.
Until now, beer and wine were only sold in the club and suite levels.
Patrons will be allowed to buy two drinks per transaction, and fans won’t be allowed to re-enter the stadium if they leave.
Drinks will be served in transparent cups.
It also eliminates the beer garden on Rogers Field from operating after the game starts.
One board member called the plan “a carefully designed project.”
A similar program jumpstarted beer and wine sales at University of Washington games, so liquor board members were comfortable with Aramark, who is the vendor for both facilities.
Liquor control board members said they’re comfortable with the process and the walkthroughs and conversations they’ve had with WSU staff.
Board members say they’ve received some letters of support and some of concern throughout the process.
WSU was one of very few FBS schools that didn’t allow beer and wine sales at football games.
The Cougs are on the road this week at North Texas. The next home game is Apple Cup.
We’ve reached out to WSU to see if the sales will begin that weekend.
