Spokane, WASH. — It’s been an incredibly difficult couple weeks for the Jenkin family.
The longtime basketball coach of the boys team at Colfax High School, Reece Jenkin, died from pancreatic cancer on Friday. That night his daughter, freshman guard Allie Jenkin, decided to lace up her shoes and play for her team. There was no doubt her father was watching over her.
Allie would go on to lead her team in the first round of the state 2B basketball tournament, scoring 41 of her team’s 61 points. She scored all the team’s points in the first half.
And that effort, has been given national attention. The latest, is she’s nominated for the Sports Illustrated HS Girls Athlete of the Week. Fans can vote here until Sunday. Right now, she’s in 2nd place.
Allie is the middle child of Reece and Breanne Jenkin.
Reece Jenkin coached the Colfax boys for 18 years. He died Friday, less than three months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Allie’s older brother Adrik lead the Colfax boys with an emotional 34 point effort that same night in the first round of the boys 2B tournament.
Adrik and Reece were named MVP and Coach of the Year in their division earlier this month.
The Colfax girls lost to Adna Pirates 53-28 in a loser-out game Wednesday morning at the Spokane Arena. Allie, who finished with 19 pts, was given flowers from Adna players after the game.
