COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Lake City is looking to put their another below-500 season behind them, and they’re counting on the experience they gained last year to make a big difference this time around.
The Timberwolves had a tough time last fall, ending with a record of 3-6, but this year they’re looking stronger because many of their players have been in big games before. Senior Quarterback, Britton Johnson, thinks that because the team knows each other so well, they’re more ready for the new season.
“With another year under our belt, I think we’ll have a real edge over where we were last season, and that’s going to make a big difference – we’re going to be better, no question.”
Johnson will lead an offense that returns most of its starters, giving Lake City confidence it can improve its production. The senior quarterback also brings a dual-threat element to the offense.
“We have a lot of returning guys,” Johnson said. “ With varsity, experience is huge.”
Brayden Van Leuven, the senior running back, has high hopes for the offense this season. With a mix of seasoned receivers and running backs, plus Johnson leading the charge at quarterback, he thinks the Timberwolves are going to be a real challenge for opposing teams to defend. The combination of all these experienced players is what’s got him feeling so optimistic.
“If we can really just put that together and switch it up, not just run all the time, not just pass all the time,” Van Leuven said, “I think that’s really going to be where our success is.”
Coach Byron Hout knows the team has some work to do – they need to get better at a few things, like having more depth, avoiding penalties before the snap, and making sure everyone knows their assignment.
“One of the problems we faced last year was a lack of depth in certain areas,” Hout explained. “This year, we’re aiming to boost our overall depth across the board, which should make a big difference in our performance.”
This summer, Hout has seen a change in his players, especially the seniors – they seem to have a different kind of energy.
“This year’s senior class is really strong, and their leadership is top-notch,” Hout said, “they’re bringing a lot of enthusiasm to the table.”
This energy is crucial for Lake City as they chase a spot in the postseason. With Idaho’s playoff format allowing two teams from the district to advance to the playoffs this season, the Timberwolves have an alternative route to secure their place.
Van Leuven believes the goal is within reach.
“We just need to come out on top in one of those league matches and we’ll be headed to the playoffs,” he said.
Lake City will look to turn its returning experience, improved preparation and senior leadership into a breakthrough season this fall.
