SPOKANE, Wash. – Winning is just what Gonzaga Prep football does.
No matter the year, no matter the opponent, the Bullpups don’t care. Winning is the standard.
“Last year’s group set that standard or lived up to that standard,” head coach Nate Graham said. “Understood that standard, just like this group understands that standard and knows what we’re trying to accomplish.”
“This group of guys is great,” senior quarterback Andrew Yarno said. “I couldn’t ask for most of the close no knit group, and super excited to work with these young guys, and it’s a great opportunity.”
Three straight perfect GSL seasons back it up, but the quest for a perfect season overall now hits year 10, and there’s plenty of youth on this roster.
“There’s no easy game, you know,” Yarno said. “And so I think that we do a good job of recognizing that and being prepared every week.”
“You’ve seen these guys play in games before and you’ve been impressed by it,” Bullpups defensive lineman Joe Pence said. “Yeah, they weren’t starters, but they are second string to the best dudes in the league. I really think that you’ll be impressed by how we play this year for sure.”
These unbeaten seniors also feature all-state kicker Paul Davidow, a five-star kicker who committed to Washington State last month.
“I kind of came in freshman year not kicking it off and just gradually throughout playing my football,” Davidow said. “I didn’t play for three years. I’ve kind of been able to understand how, you know, each position matters more and more. And so I feel a big responsibility. But I’m excited to take on, especially with being a team.”
“It’s awesome,” Graham said. “It’s definitely a weapon just watching, you know, kickoff. He kicks most of them out of the end zone. We practice field goals. It’s fun. We kind of push it. It’s like, all right, how far back can we go?”
The squad opens the season against Regis Jesuit on Friday, Sept. 4 at 6:00 p.m., and mentally, they couldn’t be more ready.
“Hit hard, make them wish they didn’t go on the field,” Pence said. “Definitely just dominate. I mean, make them wish they didn’t get the ball. Hit them hard.”
