SEATTLE — Eastern Washington walked into Husky Stadium as a heavy underdog Saturday night, but the Eagles did plenty early on to make Washington uncomfortable.
EWU ultimately fell 48-16 to the Huskies, but the Eagles kept the game within striking distance into the second half before Washington’s offense finally pulled away.
Eastern Washington used trick plays and unconventional formations to keep Washington’s defense guessing from the opening drive.
The Eagles marched into the red zone on their first possession, but had to settle for a 20-yard field goal. After Washington built a 14-3 lead, EWU answered again in the second quarter when quarterback Nate Bell kept the ball for a 14-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-10.
Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr. proved to be the difference. He finished 27-of-33 passing for 373 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Huskies score touchdowns on four of their first five possessions.
EWU had another opportunity to make things interesting early in the second half.
The Eagles put together a 77-yard drive, aided in part by 48 yards in Washington penalties. But the drive ended at the 5-yard line when Bell was stopped short on fourth-and-1.
Washington immediately turned the stop into a backbreaker.
Three plays later, Williams connected with Baron Naone for a 75-yard gain, setting up Ansu Sanoe’s 1-yard touchdown run that pushed the Huskies’ lead to 24-13.
The Huskies continued to pull away from there.
EWU will now turn its attention back to Big Sky play.
The Eagles return home next Saturday to host Cal Poly.
