EVERETT, Wash. — The Spokane Chiefs are off to the best start in franchise history.
Spokane remained unbeaten Sunday night, using two power-play goals and a strong performance from goaltender Carter Esler to beat the Everett Silvertips 3-1. The win pushed the Chiefs to 5-0-0-0, marking the first time the club has opened a season with five straight victories.
It also completed a demanding weekend sweep. Spokane won three games in three nights on the road, following Friday and Saturday victories in Portland with Sunday’s win in Everett.
Owen Martin gave the Chiefs an early lead, burying a rebound with one second remaining on a Spokane power play in the first period. Tyus Sparks fired the initial shot, with Marek Howell also assisting.
Brody Gillespie doubled the lead five minutes into the second period with another power-play goal. It was Gillespie’s fourth goal of the weekend, assisted by Owen Schoettler and Jan Brabenec.
Spokane added separation later in the period when Gavin Burcar redirected a puck into the net to make it 3-0. Sparks and Chase Harrington picked up assists on the play.
Everett got on the board midway through the third on a goal from defenseman Brek Liske, but Esler and the Chiefs held the lead the rest of the way. Esler made 23 saves in the victory, while Sparks finished with two assists.
Spokane went 2-for-6 on the power play and killed five of Everett’s six extra-man opportunities.
The Chiefs return to Spokane for their next game Friday, Oct. 9.
