PULLMAN, Wash. – Another offseason has come and gone, and for the most part, there haven’t been any major shifts in the college football universe within the last couple of months.
That’s good news for Washington State; the Cougars spent this time last year dealing with all kinds of issues as the Pac-12 conference was dissolving right before their eyes.
But from the looks of the first day of fall camp for WSU – you wouldn’t even know they were one of two teams left in their conference.
“Feels good to be back to practice, doesn’t it?” said head coach Jake Dickert. “A lot of preparation goes into this point, but what I told the guys: my plan didn’t make it great, their purpose and intent to the work makes it great.”
Dickert also added that he thinks this was the best first day of fall camp since he’s been in Pullman.
One of the bigger storylines headed into camp is the battle for starting quarterback. As back-up quarterback last season, John Mateer saw a good amount of playing time and was used in more creative situations offensively. Mateer looks to be the front runner as of now and is taking snaps with the starters.
Zevi Eckhaus, a quarterback transfer from Bryant is hot on Mateer’s tail too and will be one to continue watching.
The Cougars have exactly one month before the season kicks off against Portland State on August 31 at GESA field in Martin Stadium.
