PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State Football has a big decision on their hands.
With less than three weeks away until the season-opener, the Cougs want to be confident with their starting quarterback selection.
“It isn’t going to be about the stats… it’s going to be about the guy that gives us the best chance of winning,” said head coach Jake Dickert.
There are two quarterbacks on the WSU roster and only one can be named the starter. That’s either John Mateer or Zevi Eckhaus.
Dickert said they will evaluate how they both play during the team’s final scrimmage on Saturday, August 17 and plan to make a decision by Monday, August 19.
The Cougars open up their season at home against Portland State on August 31 which would give the starting guy about two weeks to prepare for the first game of the 2024 campaign.
As far as practice Monday, Mateer looked better than Eckhaus, making a number of unbelievable plays. Eckhaus had some questionable throws that led to interceptions – but even with that – neither quarterback has really separated himself from the other throughout fall camp.
“It is a feeling in the gut through a body of work over the last eight months,” said Dickert. “It’s going to be hard. They’re both competitors.
