PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State Cougars came up just short in their season opener, falling to the Idaho Vandals 83-81 at Beasley Coliseum.
Idaho led most of the night, taking a 43-34 lead at halftime advantage behind strong beyond-the-arc shooting from Jack Payne and Jack Rasmussen.
The Cougs battled back in the second half, led by Ace Glass, who sparked a late run with several key buckets.
With 1:31 remaining, Washington State trailed by six before Julian Morton nailed a three to cut the deficit by three.
The Vandals ran into foul trouble down the stretch, allowing the Cougs to stay within close distance, but the Vandals held on in the final seconds to secure the win, 83-81.
Idaho returns to Moscow next to host Whitman this Friday at 6:00 p.m., and WSU hits the long road trip to face Davidson also on Friday at 4:00 p.m. PST.
