SPOKANE, Wash. — With three days left until the World Cup kickoff, Egypt’s soccer team arrived at their base camp at Gonzaga University’s Luger Field.
They arrived around noon Monday, and with them, one of the best players internationally, Mo Salah.
Security was tight around the field. Police cars blocked the entrance and drones flew overhead during the closed practice.
Soccer fan Zachary Schwab stopped by to see the team arrive.
“I was like, oh my gosh, when else are they going to be on our hometown?” Schwab said. “So I figured I’d walk over and see if we could catch a glimpse.”
“For us here being able to show them our facilities and things like that, it’s an exciting opportunity for our community,” said Chris McGaughey, Gonzaga’s men’s soccer coach.
Gonzaga has been preparing the soccer field for two months.
The team will hold an open practice Wednesday at Luger Field. All 500 tickets have already been given out to the public.
