SEATTLE, Wash. – History for the United States, again.
A 2-0 finish in Seattle put the Americans over Australia in a landmark victory, one that not only guarantees advancement into the knockout rounds but also lands back-to-back modern World Cup wins for the first time in USMNT history, and the first time in any World Cup since 1930.
Australia’s Cameron Burgess scored an own goal in the 11th minute after a dangerous pass near the goal line from Folarin Balogun.
The second came after a successful VAR review confirmed an Alex Freeman header, originally ruled offside.
The match ended with a flurry of yellow cards and ticky-tacky fouls, as both sides became quite chippy.
The 2-0 result locks the USA into the Round of 32, with a chance to win Group D if Paraguay either beats or draws with Türkiye in tonight’s nightcap match.
