SPOKANE, Wash. — Thousands of people will be playing at Hoopfest this year and unfortunately, injuries are bound to happen.
That’s why MultiCare will have medical experts all around the tournament to help anyone who needs it.
Last year alone, MultiCare helped over a thousand people during the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world.
Many of those people just needed to be taped up before playing, but others suffered serious injuries like a concussion or a torn Achilles.
That’s why MultiCare will have three medical tents at the tournament so people can get the care they need.
“We have our folks that treat those on site, so you’ll be able to see your sub-specialist right away,” said Hoopfest medical director Dr. Nicholas Strasser. “We have folks to help coordinate care, even if you’re not from Spokane.”
MultiCare says about 40% of the players from Hoopfest are from Western Washington, so it coordinates with MultiCare doctors on the west side to hold spots for anyone that may need treatment there after the tournament.
The main medical tent will be set up right across the street from Riverfront Park. Services will be free for players and spectators.
“It’s one of those things where we can remove a barrier of care of cost, especially for the acute injuries for fans and spectators,” Dr. Strasser said. “Obviously, Spokane streets can be a little inconsistent and with the rain anticipated, we think it’s going to be a little slick.”
Dr. Strasser said it’s important to have shoes with ankle support or get taped up before you play. Even though there may be rain during Hoopfest, it is always important to stay hydrated.
