DENVER- Former Gonzaga Bulldog Gabriel Hughes has been called up to the MLB by the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. Hughes will be the 33rd Gonzaga alum to appear in the MLB when he makes his debut.
Hughes was a standout player for the Zags between 2020 and 2022. In his junior year, he had an amazing season, getting 138 strikeouts – the second highest in a single season for a Gonzaga pitcher. This earned him First Team All-American honors. He was then picked by the Rockies in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft, going down in history as the highest drafted player from Gonzaga when he was chosen 10th overall.
During his three years at Gonzaga University, Hughes had an impressive stat line, with a career ERA of 3.05 and got 218 strikeouts in 171 innings pitched. What’s interesting is that he didn’t just focus on pitching, he was also a two-way player, his first two seasons, he started 40 games in the field and made 30 appearances as a pitcher.
Gabriel Hughes is expected to make his first MLB in the next five days while the Rockies host a home series against the Marlins and the Giants. Hughes has struck out 230 batters across 221.2 innings of work across four years in the Rockies minor league system.
