MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals (0-3, 0-1) continue their losing streak with a 23-17 home-opening loss to the Lamar Cardinals (2-1).
Lamar blew the game open late in the first half, scoring two touchdowns over the final 70 seconds of the game, racing out to a 20-3 lead at the break.
Quarterback Aiden McCown, son of former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, threw for 159 yards and a touchdown, plus rushed for 33 yards and another score. Idaho QB Joshua Wood threw for more, 205, plus 78 on the ground, but he and the Vandals only converted one of five fourth-down attempts.
Idaho’s defense played much better than the 104 points allowed over the first two weeks, and they held Lamar to just a field goal in the second half.
The Vandals now turn to another home game, hosting the Abilene Christian Wildcats next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
