SPOKANE, Wash. – For the first time since 2005, the Idaho Vandals (2-0) women’s basketball program beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs (1-1).
The 86-75 final featured a 16-0 opening run from Idaho, ballooning to 24 points into the second half. Gonzaga played well in the fourth quarter, but the effort was too little, too late.
“I think it was a lot about our energy and effort on the court,” Zags star guard Allie Turner said. “They simply played harder than us and outcompeted us. So I think that was the main message in the locker room.”
Turner finished the night with
“We just need to play harder,” Turner said. “We need to practice harder. We need to push each other more. And that was pretty embarrassing. So, I think that it’s good motivation for the future, but I wish it didn’t happen.”
Gonzaga next hosts the UC Riverside Highlanders this Sunday at 2:00 p.m., while Idaho next travels to Washington State to take on the Cougs Monday at 11:00 a.m.
